Historical data, or price history, is the record of past price movements for a financial instrument. Traders use this data, which includes the Open, High, Low, and Close (OHLC) prices, to analyze market trends and test trading strategies before using them live. Here’s how you can export this data from your trading platform.
Exporting Data from MetaTrader 4 (MT4)
MT4 users can export data through the History Center. Follow these steps:
- From the main menu at the top, navigate to Tools and select History Center.
- In the window that opens, find your desired symbol (e.g., XAUUSD) and double-click it.
- Select the timeframe you want (e.g., 1-hour, 4-hour, or daily).
- Click the Export button to save the data as a CSV file, which you can open with a program like Microsoft Excel.
Please note: The amount of historical data available varies by timeframe, and it does not allow for exporting a specific date range. In MT4, longer timeframes often have a much longer history than shorter ones. For example, you may find data for a daily chart dating back several years, while a 5-minute chart may only have a more limited history.
Exporting Data from MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
MT5 offers a more advanced method for exporting data with more customization. Here’s how you can do it:
- From the top menu, go to View and select Symbols, or press Ctrl + U.
- In the Symbols window, find the symbol you are interested in (e.g., EURUSD) and click on it.
- Navigate to the Bars tab. Here, you can select the desired timeframe from the dropdown menu (e.g., M15).
- You can also set a specific date range for the data you want to export.
- Click the Request button to load the data for the selected period.
- Once the data has loaded, click the Export Bars button to save it as a CSV file, which can be opened in a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel.
Important Note: The amount of historical data you can export is limited by what is stored on our server. This is common across trading platforms. Shorter timeframes may have a more limited history compared to longer ones.
Tips & Troubleshooting
- No Data? If you are not seeing any data for a specific period, it's possible that data is not available on our servers for that time.
- Choosing a Platform: The steps for exporting data differ between MT4 and MT5. If you're unsure which platform you are using, you can check the window title or the platform's icon on your computer.
